Art Workshops with GEMS First Point School, Dubai
Final Mary Poppins Exhibition 2023!Â
230 works of art created by students during the six workshops.
GEMS First Point students created artwork linked to the musical Mary Poppins. The artwork was on display in a public exhibition during the week that the Year 5 and 6 students performed Mary Poppins in December. Â
Each year group has learnt more progressively challenging art skills.
Year 1 - Kite making workshopÂ
Students used either watercolour and wax resist to create their individual kites or tissue paper collage resulting in bright, colourful and unique kites!
Year 6 - Poly-block printing
Year 6 students learnt new printmaking skills, engraving Mary Poppins 'motifs' into polystyrene then rolling ink over the top to create a relief print. The polystyrene was 'reduced' by cutting away areas and reapplying ink in a different colour to create a 2/3 colour relief print. Â
Students selected quotes from Mary Poppins to complement their artwork.
Using a stencil to paint Mary Poppins into our skies!
Year 4 students learnt how to draw a silhouette of the Dubai skyline and use watercolours to create a magical background for Mary Poppins to fly in! All the students produced very individual work.
Year 3 students made 'paper cut out' collages inspired by the artwork of Henri Matisse, in particular his collage 'Beasts of the sea, 1950'! They were bright, colourful and highlighted the simple shapes we would all recognise in the Mary Poppins musical. All the students considered the layout of block colours and selected the shapes they wanted to cut out. There was some great use of complementary colours and some wonderful creative outcomes!
Year 2 Mary Poppins printing workshop
Year 2 students learnt simple printing skills that illustrated rain using bubble wrap, corrugated card and straws! They personalised their paper cut out motifs with paint pen.

STAMP
Students in FS1 and 2 took part in a workshop where they were amazing at drawing dots, cutting dots and printing dots! These dots were inspired by the artist Kandinsky and his paintings of concentric circles! All these dots only used the four colours of the UAE flag and they have been assembled to make a large UAE flag. This collaborative FPS artwork will be on display for Flag day.
'We are One'
Â
Year 3 students learnt about Stone Age cave art! They learnt about the style of cave art, the materials that were used which were made from the natural environment and the reasons why Stone Age people may have felt compelled to record their surroundings on the walls of caves.
Everyone enjoyed drawing animals, people, symbols and patterns using mixed media but the highlight was using their hands as a stencil and spraying paint around it!

Artwork exhibited in a cave!
Students learnt about Kandinsky's paintings, in particular his images of concentric rings. They reviewed their colour theory knowledge of Primary and Secondary colours to create their own Kandinsky circles in oil pastels, paper collage and paint. These were exhibited in the entrance to FS1/2 as a wonderful collaborative piece of art!
Wassily Kandinsky Squares with Concentric Circles, 1913
FS2 Kandinsky rings exhibition!
Students observed the details of a flower using a magnifying glass and drawing what they could see in a range of media, helping to develop their fine motor skills. Students learnt how the American artist Georgia O'Keeffe painted enlarged details of flowers to ensure that we could all find the 'extraordinary in the ordinary'. The students produced some creative and personal responses which really were extraordinary!
Art Workshop with Nexus International School, Singapore
At Nexus International School, Singapore, students across the school painted an individual pebble to represent the diversity within the school community. These were publicly displayed in groups and later plastered into the walls around the school.
