The National Curriculum for England
As an educator I intend to:
Expose students to a wide range of media, materials and tools and to open student’s eyes to some of the ways in which these can be experimented with, used and applied creatively.
Inspire students creatively, using a variety of starting points/hooks/artistic stimuli and outcomes.
Develop students’ knowledge, skills and techniques in drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, collage, textiles and digital art. By refining their application of artistic techniques, students will be equipped with the ability to experiment, invent and create.
Offer opportunities for students to create artwork in a range of scales, and to create both independently and collaboratively.
Create a classroom ethos based on encouragement and positivity during Art and Design lessons/workshops so that students are able to experiment in a safe environment where there are no right or wrong results: thus enhancing students’ self-expression and self-esteem.
Value and celebrate all student’s creative endeavours whilst maintaining high expectations in terms of individuals’ achievements.
Introduce students to a range of works from both famous and little-known contemporary artists, craftspeople and designers, exposing them to the different styles the artists use.
Develop students’ critical thinking skills as they gain a more rigorous understanding of art and design, artists and art movements.
Instil an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our world history and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of communities.
Celebrate our artists’ successes through displaying artwork prominently in school and sharing it with the wider community through various means.
The National Curriculum for Art and Design KS1-3 aims to ensure that all students:
produce creative work,
explore their ideas,
record their experiences,
become proficient in the skills of drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Students will gain an understanding of the Elements of Art: line, shape and form, colour, texture, space and value. They will also learn how artists use these elements to create artwork and express ideas.
The Principles of Design are contrast, emphasis, movement, repetition, proportion, pattern, scale, unity, variety, rhythm, mass, shape, space, balance, volume, perspective, and depth. These are the foundations of creating art and provide the framework for how Artists arrange the 'Elements of Art' to create an Artwork.
In addition to the elements and principles of design, a variety of art materials including paint, clay, pastels, chalk, charcoal, ink are all explored.
